To enter this field, you will need to obtain some type of certification through the American Academy of Project Management (AAPM). This is a highly respected organization that offers training in various aspects of the field which certifies that you have enough training and knowledge to work as a project management professional. There are different types of certifications that can be obtained and you do not have to complete them in any particular order.

If you are willing to spend three years studying and working in the field to gain experience, you can choose the AAPM Professional Project Management credential. If you already have some coursework completed or have experience in the field, you may be able to receive waivers for that experience and earn your MPM or Master Project Manager certification. There are two other options to consider as well: CIPM, or Certified International Project Manager, and PME, or E-Business Project Manager.

Once you start working as a project management professional, you can go on to earn higher degrees. Through PMI, you can earn your PMP and then strive for higher achievement over time. You might consider a Certified Project Management Associate (CAPM), Program Management Professional (PgMP), or PMI Programming Professional (PMI-SP). If risk management appeals to you, there is also a PMI Risk Management Professional (PMI-RMP) certification.

This can be an exciting field for those who enjoy organizing and motivating a group of people to complete complex projects, but you will need to continue your education at the graduate level to constantly rise through the ranks in your field. The permanent worker should not be beaten, every job needs people who get the job done diligently but who won’t look up their name on the office door. Don’t let them be ignored, like every member of your team, they play an important role at work. Ask them for ideas. Encourage them to participate in the discussions to make sure they still feel involved.

A lone wolf may have difficulty communicating or may not want to communicate. Make sure you know what it is! If they want to connect and be part of the team but don’t know how, guide them.
