Top 5 Roles Played by Sam Claflin

Short description: British actor Sam Claflin has proved his talent in a short span of time. Here are the top 5 roles played by him on the big and small screens.

Most good actors are chameleons, since their job is to pretend to be someone other than themselves. We all know actors who have played various different kinds of roles for decades and have become household names. And then, there are actors like British actor Sam Claflin, who in a very short span of time, has proved himself talented enough to play totally different characters in big-budget blockbusters both on the big screen as well as on the small. Here are the top five characters Sam Claflin has played that prove what an amazing actor he is.

1. Finnick Odair, Hunger Games

How can anyone talk about Sam Claflin without talking about the role that made him a global star? His character in Hunger Games is young, confident, brash and a veritable sex symbol. He makes women go weak in the knees and he knows it! Over the course of the movie, he develops into a more rounded character, and audiences get to see his past and moral compass. That is what ultimately convinces Katniss of his good intentions. Claflin totally threw himself into the role, which is evident from his chiselled physique and boyish charm. Funny story: at a party, Claflin had guzzled quite a bit of booze and was having a good time. Later, the director told him that it was exactly what he wanted, and told Claflin to be the way he was after a few drinks!

2. William, Snow White and the Huntsman

Alright, there are a few things William has in common with Finnick. Both are good fighters and both of them have a code of honour. But the similarities end there. While Hunger Games is arguably science fiction, Snow White and the Huntsman is a fantasy action film with a medieval setting. Claflin’s William is also quite the opposite of a womaniser, being the son of a duke. The British actor brings a gravitas to the role that sets him apart from his co-stars, which is probably why he was selected for Hunger Games the next year!

3. Richard Sharp, Adrift

This was a huge departure from his earlier fictional characters in fantasy or sci-fi settings. Adrift is based on a real life survival story of a couple caught in a hurricane while sailing on a yacht. Claflin played the role of the fiancé. For the movie, the British hunk had to lose a ton of weight and learn how to sail in just 10 days before the shooting began! Since the original couple were lost at sea, they had little food. To truthfully emulate that, Claflin and his co-star Shailene Woodley skipped dinners for a month, and ate eggs and semi-steamed vegetables only. The result was an amazing performance that was cut short with the untimely death of the character.

4.  Will Traynor, Me Before You

From swashbuckling action figures, Claflin went polar opposite with his role of a tetraplegic in Me Before You. The British actor played a completely paralysed man confined to a wheelchair, and is set for assisted suicide in six months. The character of Will Traynor is complicated, full of both the positives of love and yet also with the bitterness of being paralysed. Claflin’s chemistry with Emilia Clarke is electric, and it’s a shame the movie went mostly under the radar, as it gave Claflin a rare opportunity to flex his dramatic muscles.

5. Oswald Mosley, Peaky Blinders (TV series)

Audiences were quite surprised when Claflin, known for playing handsome good guys, appeared in critically acclaimed TV series Peaky Blinders as the main antagonist. But in less than two episodes, Claflin played the role of the scheming, fascist politician so convincingly that audiences started hating the character and loving his portrayal! It’s no mean feat to be able to become a fan favourite when you’re playing opposite one of British TV’s most loved protagonists, Cillian Murphy’s Thomas Shelby. But now, fans are eagerly waiting for Claflin’s Mosley to return in Season 6 of Peaky Blinders

Of course, there are many other characters Sam Claflin has played, including that of Mycroft Holmes in Enola Holmes. Which of them would you include in the top 5? Tell us in the comments below. -Tushar
