Why should you visit a therapist if you have OCD?

Mental illness should not be taken for granted. It is not something that will soon pass over with time. Time would not heal your illness; rather, it will make it severe. Mental illnesses should not be treated with people advice who think that spending some time in the sun or in social gatherings will heal everything, and those who think these episodes will pass are totally not aware of how mental sickness can ruin your daily activities. One needs to know that if you have any mental illness, you should seek a therapist who will help you overcome the sickness. 

No mental issue is small or huge; be it anxiety or depression, you should not take it lightly. People sometimes have uncontrollable obsessions and compulsions due to which they do things that they don’t want to do but do it anyway as they find it necessary, like checking twice or thrice if the door is locked or not. But this is not a mental sickness. These obsessions and compulsions become a sickness when they are repetitive and hinder a person’s daily life. This is known as obsessive-compulsion disorder (OCD), which would need the person going through this to seek a therapist. 

How to know if someone has OCD?

Every illness will have some symptoms. Before it reaches too far, you would need to identify those symptoms and seek help. A person with OCD will have both obsessions and compulsions which they will not be able to control. The anxiety will cause them to do things that might seem odd for their behavior. 

  • Obsession symptoms include having a fear of being contaminated by germs, cannot stand things being unorganized, un-wanting, and having uncontrollable thoughts. The fear of making a mistake, hurting someone, or embarrassment are all obsessive fears. People having obsessions would not touch anything if they fear getting contaminated; they will check the stove, lock, again and again, they will fear losing control over something. 
  • Compulsion behavior is the need to do the things that will eradicate the effect of your obsessions, like washing hands every time you touch something, rearranging the things, organizing things near you, checking & counting, following routine. 
  • People with OCD may also do short, unexpected, and repeated actions and movements like blinking their eyes oddly, jerking their heads, shrugging their heads.
  • People with OCD may have symptoms of both obsessions and compulsions or just one, but these behavioral changes are going to cause difficulties in one life as they may cause distress and cut you from your social circle. 

When something is affecting your life drastically, you would need to find a solution, and in this case, you need to seek a therapist who will help you get over your illness. A professional therapist to treat your OCD will have the solution as they are trained people authorized to treat such sicknesses. 

  • Therapists will use Cognitive-behavioral therapy in which you will talk to them and get all your emotions out. They, in turn, will listen to you and try to find out how to deal with a bunch load of emotions by helping you opt for healthier ways to cope up with what you feel. 
  • The therapy sessions will be divided among days, and your progress will also be measured. The sessions will help you understand these emotions and recognize different ways to deal with them. 
  • By opting for therapy for OCD, you will realize how the obsessions and thoughts are affecting your life, and it could become worse if you didn’t take the right step in time. 
  • Apart from cognitive behavioral therapy for OCD, you may also be prescribed some medications that will help with your compulsion and negative thoughts. 
  • If not, then the professional may also use exposure and response prevention in which they will tell you to do the thing you fear and would not let your respond as you usually do. 

Going to therapy will help you and recover easily from OCD without making it severe where it goes far beyond your reach. The professionals with their therapy sessions will try to give you a healthier life in which you are not compelled to respond to your fears, urges, and thoughts. You would be able to enjoy your social gatherings without fear of committing mistakes and getting embarrassed.
